Cyber Monday can be a great time to snag some awesome deals on holiday gifts. It can also be a great time to think you’re getting a deal and accidentally pay more for something than you have to.

Retailers offer a ton of different discounts on Cyber Monday. While some of them might be deep once-in-a-lifetime discounts, others might just look like a bargain but not actually be an improvement over the item’s price elsewhere.

So, how do you know if you’re getting a deal?

There are a number of tools out there that can give you a feel for not only what you can buy a particular item for elsewhere, but also what the historical price of the item might be.

Our favorite is CamelCamelCamel which tracks prices specifically on Amazon and helps you map out trends and find the best time to buy items on the site.

If you’re not shopping on Amazon (or even if you are), another great tool to try is InvisibleHand. It takes a look at what you’re buying and lets you know if you can get it cheaper somewhere else. If you can, it offers a link to the cheaper site. It also displays the price for things even when the retailer hides it, which can save you the hassle of putting a bunch of things in your cart on Cyber Monday just to determine how much they actually cost.

If you’re not sold on using a tool, a good ol’ fashioned Google search can also be a decent thing to try before you bite the bullet on a big purchase and can often surface a better deal on the item elsewhere.
