The announcement of Hugh Hefner’s death on Wednesday sparked a wide range of emotions from those who knew the controversial figure personally and those who just read the articles of Playboy magazine.

Hefner was known for being the publishing phenomenon behind Playboy and the sexual revolutionary behind a hedonistic lifestyle. While many celebrated their positive thoughts about Hefner and their times at the mansion, others are calling attention to his alleged treatment of the many women that lived with him and the negative role Playboy might have played in culture.

Folks like Kim Kardashian, Larry King, Gene Simmons, Diddy and more have shared throwback images of the man and their condolences.

Rest in peace to my man Hugh Hefner!! Love You, Puff! You will be missed!!!

Meanwhile others, including various writers and Mujer Maravilla director Joss Whedon, have spoken up about the complicated man and his knack for objectifying women and perpetuating the ‘male gaze’ culture.
